Redecorating Your Windows for Changing Seasons

Admin • Jan 29, 2021

As the seasons change and the weather swings toward one extreme or another, your home's decorations can shift along with them. Your windows particularly need different touches in different seasons; their purposes change and adjust to the time of year. Take a look at the ways you can adapt your window treatments to each season as they come along.

Spring

When the dark and chilly days of winter have passed, your windows can let in the fresh air and light you had to keep out before. Once the weather starts warming up, switch out the dark, heavy, insulating drapes for a lighter, more decorative fabric that will feel like a breath of fresh air.

Each room can have other elements that tie into your new draperies. If you have curtains up in a bedroom, you can match the pattern to your spring-appropriate bedclothes and blankets. In the living room, add some fun floral throw pillows to your sofas, while in the kitchen, you can use a cheery and colorful tablecloth. The effort you put into matching will help each room look more cohesive.

Summer

You can keep a lot of things from spring and allow them to carry over into summer, and that includes your curtains. To let in extra light while retaining your privacy, you can invest in sheer white fabric drapes on each window. Be careful of opening the windows, though; a strong breeze could mean even lightweight fabric has the potential to knock something over.

Many people also enjoy bringing the outdoors inside during the summer, using decorative themes that hint at fun activities. One of the most popular is a nautical style, using fabrics covered in anchors, seashells, and sailboats for curtains, pillows, and drop covers. You could also keep the florals of spring, but add palm leaves or pineapples to portray an island spirit within your home.

Fall

Autumn is one of the easiest seasons to decorate for; the warm tones and thematic elements are plentiful and beautiful. For your curtains, follow through with the warmth by changing out the sheers and cotton drapes. Replace them with heavier materials in a fall color or warm neutral to keep your home cozy. You'll have to sacrifice some natural light to retain heat, so make sure you have candles and lamps ready.

Use the harvesttime decoration options to your advantage; many crops come to fruition in the fall, so pick your favorite produce items and display them proudly. Red, orange, yellow, and brown are all pleasant autumn hues, so match your fabrics once again. Add some texture with soft throw blankets in strategic places, and use them when the evenings start to get chilly.

Winter

The holidays give you many opportunities to decorate every corner of your home, but the rest of winter can sometimes feel like a letdown after all of that excitement. For your windows, the most essential part is the functionality. If you didn't already, put up warm drapes of thick cloth to keep the cold outside and the heat inside.

As far as your decorating schemes go, you can keep the red curtains from autumn and add some green on your drapery rod to carry the festive theme into winter. Gold and silver accents will help take the celebration mood to the next level. Once the holidays wind down, you can retain snow-themed decorations more easily than Santa or reindeer, which can help you save some money on decor.
